History of Fishers Indiana
Formerly known as Fishers Station and Fishers Switch, the town of Fishers was established in June of 1872 when Salathiel Fisher divided his land into town lots. At the time of the purchase, William Conner was living in Delaware Township operating a trading post, which is now the modern day Conner Prairie Living History Museum. Conner's house was connected via Indian trail to Anderson and Connersville, and by state road to Fort Wayne. Portions of this state road later became present day Allisonville Road. Fishers' population grew slowly, and only totaled 388 in the 1960s. The relocation of Indiana Highway 37 to the east side of town and the subsequent connection with I-69 ensured the future growth of Fishers as a commercial and residential center.
The town of Fishers is rapidly becoming an upscale residential and commercial center which extends from White River on the west to Geist Reservoir on the east. In addition to becoming a preferred location for corporate headquarters and exclusive residential subdivisions, Fishers has retained its small town charm along with cultural amenities such as Conner Prairie and Ritchey Woods Nature Preserve. Fishers is now governed by a seven-member Town Board of Trustees. (Fishers Department of Development)
