On top of being the district where the City Market lies, Mass Ave (Massachusetts Avenue) is the art and theatre Mecca of Indianapolis. The top theatres of the city dot the avenue and are housed in some of Indianapolis's most unique buildings. Standing since 1909, the architecture of the Murat is modeled after an Islamic mosque and has been showcasing national Broadway and music acts in Indianapolis since 1910. Across the street lies the Athenaeum Building that houses the American Cabaret Theatre, Indy's premiere original production theatre company.

The second major neighborhood of the Mass Ave district is Chatham Arch. This neighborhood is located directly north and east of Lockerbie Square mostly on the north side of Massachusetts Avenue and between East Street and College Avenue. Chatham Arch is also one of the oldest neighborhoods of Indianapolis and mostly noted for its irregular street pattern. Once the home of many working- class Civil War era residents, Chatham Arch has a unique cultural reminiscent of days gone by.
